Sasol marathon will see some of the best marathon runners in southern Africa once again

28th Sasol Marathon in Sasolburg on 25 March 2023

On Saturday 25 March 2023, Sasol is sponsoring the Sasol Marathon in Sasolburg for the 28th time.  Over the years this popular event has seen some of the best marathon runners in southern Africa participating in a fast, flat race that is also a qualifier for the Comrades marathon that will take plane on 11 June this year.

One of the runners to be on the lookout for is former Sasol Banyana Banyana defender Rose “Pona” Jijane running in the colours of ArcelorMittal Athletics Club. Rose is one of the most capped national women soccer players who made her debut for Banyana Banyana against Cameroon in the 1998 African Women Cup of Nation.

Apart from the attractive flat route through Sasolburg that runs past the Sasol factory and the Sasolburg Highveld Garden, the Sasol Marathon will again have efficient water points at every 3km along the route. These are manned by Sasol employees and local businesses to enhance athletes’ running experience.

Only on-line pre-entries are available this year for the 42,2; 21,1 and 10km races on www.entryninja.com until 22 March 2023.  The cost of the races is R250 for the 42,2km marathon, R180 for the 21,1km half marathon and R100 for the 10km race. Runners should note that temporary licences must be bought at R70 on-line with entries.

Those interested in competing in the 5km race can register online, but late entries can also be done on the day before the race.  This year the entry fee is only R50 and promises to again be a fun event for young and old.

The 42.2km and 21.1km races will start at 06:00 in front of the DP de Villiers Stadium in Sasolburg, while the 10km race will commence at 06:15.  The 5km run will start at 06:30.

All athletes who finish the race for which they entered within the respective cut-off times, will receive a medal. Athletes will have 5 hours to complete the 42,2km; 3 hours for the 21,1km; 2 hours for the 10km and 1 hour to finish the 5km race. The prize giving will take place at 10:00 inside the stadium.

According to Thuli Mbuli, Head Community Affairs at Sasol’s Sasolburg and Ekandustria Operations, Sasol is proud to have been the sponsor of the popular Sasol Marathon over the years. “We would like to thank every athlete who has participated over the years and in particular our implementation partners, the Sasolburg Athletics Club as well as Athletics Free State without whom the Sasol Marathon cannot be held,” she said.

In the interest of the safety of participating athletes and members of the public, road users are advised to take note that the Sasol Marathon will be run in the streets of Sasolburg on 25 March 2023 and to adhere to the marshals and traffic officials from the Metsimaholo Local Municipality who will be on duty to direct athletes and minimise impact on motorists. More information on the marathon can be obtained from the race organiser at 073 339 6809.
