DVD of the week: Pan

8/10 for Pan...

Whatever you thought you knew about Peter Pan and Captain Hook – scratch it.
With fairy tales, we grew up knowing that Peter Pan’s greatest enemy is Captain Hook, but what we do not know, is how Peter and Hook became enemies.
In this new fantasy adventure of Pan, we are taken back to the very beginning, before Peter became a Pan, and Hook became a captain.
During World War II, a 12-year-old orphan, Peter (Levi Miller) is spirited away to a world where pirates are real and Captain Blackbeard (Hugh Jackman) reigns over the magical realm called Neverland.
Deep down in a fairy-dust mine, Peter meets James Hook (Garrett Hedlund). Peter learns he can fly, and finds out that he is part of a very important prophecy meant to overthrow Blackbeard and save Neverland.
Peter and Hook escape the mine in a flying ship and flee to the forest where they run into natives led by Chief Great Little Panther (Jack Charles) who acknowledges Peter as their Pan (their people’s greatest hero).
Together, Peter Pan, James Hook and the chief’s daughter, Tiger Lily (Rooney Mara), tries to save the fairy kingdom of Neverland from Blackbeard’s selfish and cruel ways.
Neverland introduces both fun and danger to young Peter but, ultimately, helps him to discover his true destiny and become the hero that will forever be known as the great Peter Pan.

*Pan has no age restriction but parental guidance is advised for younger children.*
I would rate this movie 8/10.
Pan is available for rent at DVD4home on the corner of Retief and Govan Mbeki Streets. Tel: 018 293 3895.
