Pedal for Poverty: Colourful cycling in the name of charity

Parysenaars will get the opportunity to experience the most fun on two wheels they have ever had when mountain biking and a big splash of colour collide, all in the name of charity in Potchefstroom.

Parysenaars will get the opportunity to experience the most fun on two wheels they have ever had when mountain biking and a big splash of colour collide, all in the name of charity in Potchefstroom.

On Saturday, 3 September, Hashtag Events will host the Pedal for Poverty cycling challenge with the main goal of raising funds for disadvantaged students.
Pedal for Poverty will take place at Friesland Melkery situated just outside of Potchefstroom next to the R53 road towards Parys Free State.
This project is the brainchild of 14 NWU-Pukke Tourism Honours students of 2016, who started Hashtag Events.
According to the head of communications at Hashtag Events, Olivia Wilson, this event provides an opportunity to give back to the student community.

“We want to give students the opportunity to study, especially is they come from underprivileged backgrounds.”
“The North-West University supports us 100 per cent in this project and we are sure it will be a success. It is something different that has never before happened in Potch,” said Chireé Jacobs, CEO of Hashtag Events.

“Colour reminds me of spring when every-thing is fresh, new and blossoming. Colour is also associated with fun. We want to combine the important cause of charity with fun. A person can have a good time whilst doing something for those in need,” Wilson said.

Registrations will take place between 06:00-06:45 on race day, with contestants needing to fill in consent forms before getting onto the track. The cycling event starts at 07:00 and will continue until 11:00. There are three categories that participants can take on, namely Cyclomaniacs (professional cyclists), Tour de Family (families and no one younger than 12) and Pro-beerders (student cyclists). Contestants will have the option of entering in groups of two or four members.

Pedal for Poverty also provides riders with two routes to choose from, namely Route A (7.5 kilometres) and Route B (6 kilometres). The competition is not distance-based, but rather on how many laps riders can complete in three hours.
“The great thing about the event is that anyone can join in the fun no matter the age level or experience,” added Wilson.

Application fee: R200 per person.

Food and beverages, entertainment, a cash bar, a beer tent, as well as lucky draws and an auction, can be expected.
