Fast-paced tournament for canoe polo players

Canoe polo and whitewater kayaking are great sports to foster teamwork, paddling skills, and an appreciation for our rivers and dams.

On Sunday, 10 March, three canoe polo clubs converged at Likkewaan Canoe Club (LKK) for a canoe polo tournament that saw over 30 players, including six from Parys, battle it out on the pitch.

Two senior and three junior teams displayed their skills in a competitive format that mixes participants to create balanced teams and a style of play with spectator value.

Senior men face off at the Parys tri-club tournament.

Players ranged in age from 14 to over 60, from beginners to seasoned national representatives.

The players extend a big thank you to the LKK committee for assisting in preparing the pitch by cutting away reeds and branches and clearing water lettuce earlier in the week. The previous day, several players from the Dabulamanzi Canoe Club in Johannesburg attended a beginner kayak school, run by Whitewater Training in Parys to diversify their paddling skills and expand their options for water-based activities. The group fared well, even though the water level was low, and we are sure to see them back on the Vaal as they grow their interest in the sport.

Legwork and teamwork made the Metrogaine orienteering challenge fun for all.

Parys residents and out-of-towners tested their navigation skills in the suburbs of Parys on Saturday, 9 March, when they took on the fun Metrogaine Parys orienteering challenge. Residents may have been curious to see teams of two pausing outside their homes and in public spaces to gather answers to 30 clues and return to the Beer House before their allocated one hour ran out.

A big thank you to Belinda and Kiki’s for the prizes they donated and the Beer House for providing the start.
