A second chance for these four legged friends

Thank you to all who support the SPCA.

The local SPCA at the beginning of February had a record number of seven adoptions for the week. People who offered care and a loving home for these unwanted, stray or neglected animals and by this act of kindness gave them a second chance.

Remember that in line with the SPCA policy, it strives to prevent animal cruelty and unwanted animals. Therefore, dogs and cats adopted from the SPCA must be sterilised. At a total cost of R1,550 for a dog, or R1,000 for a cat, you can help give one of our pet friends a loving home. The fee is much cheaper than if you should have to take your animal to the vet for sterilisation, as the SPCA has a good relationship with veterinarians willing to help the SPCA.

Besides sterilisation, the cost includes deworming, tick and flea treatment, vaccination, taking the animal to the vet, and a home visit to ensure that your new friend can adapt and be safe at your home.

Before you buy a pet, speak to the friendly personnel of your local SPCA and enquire about dogs and cats available for adoption. An appointment will then be made to meet the dog or cat your are interested in adopting. The necessary paperwork will be done and if you have other dogs and cats, it will be arranged for you to bring them to the SPCA to meet their new friend to see if they get along.

Thereafter the SPCA will do a home inspection to ensure that the dog or cat that will be adopted, will be safe and sound at it’s new home. You will then pay the fee, and the sterilisation and vaccination will be done whereafter your new friend will be ready to go home with you.

There are many success stories of pets adopted from the SPCA. Yo Maasberg came from Nieu Zealand to Parys in September 2023. She brought her two cats with her whom she got from the SPCA in New Zealand. Sadly one of the cats one morning took off to the streets and never returned. Tireless efforts to find the cat, even offering a reward, had no success.

Yo then went to Parys SPCA and immediately fell in love with Peatsy. She started the process to adopt her and haven’t regretted it for a moment since Yo brought her home with her in October last year. She is a sweetheart who won Yo’s heart from the day she saw her at the SPCA.
