Paddlers look forward to the warmer weather ahead

The Florida Lake Canoe Club based in Roodepoort hosted a flat water marathon on 19 August, the end of the winter season. The event included a six-km race for "guppies" - under 8 to under 12 age group paddlers, a short 10-km course for the less fit and newer paddlers, and a 20-km race for the stronger, fitter and more energetic sportsmen.

The weather was sunny, but the wind was choppy, with intermittent splashes and waves. However, the paddlers enjoyed their racing opportunity, and the race attracted nearly 90 participants.

Sylvia Nel, who has lived in the Parys area for many years and paddles extensively on the Vaal River with superb river racing skills, participated in the event despite returning from a long holiday overseas with no training.

Sylvia partnered with Pippa Martin to enjoy the 1 hour 18 minutes as they cruised around the lake, greeting friends and other racers. They were the second Ladies K2 (Double Kayak) finishers.
