Years of pain over thanks to these doctors and hospital’s care

They are grateful to the ambulance staff, especially Eunice and Jackson for their help, Ms. Malinga and her staff, and doctors Ndzero and Mulondo who went out of their way to show their care in more than words despite challenges.

Sitting in his hospital bed, 64-year-old Andries Calitz has no pain. Something he hadn’t known in years.

Ever since he suffered a broken leg in a work injury in 1991, his leg has been bothering him. It grew crooked. Screws and plates were inserted three times. Several bone grafts followed over nine years, but the pain remained, and his leg was shorter than before.

A year ago, the condition of his leg further deteriorated due to prolonged infection, and he could no longer walk.

As a state patient, he repeatedly went to the Parys and Boitumelo hospitals for treatment, but the treatment was unsuccessful and the pain unbearable.

Andries needed urgent surgery, but every time Dr. Eric Ndzeru, orthopedic surgeon at Boitumelo hospital in Kroonstad had to operate on him, the operation had to be postponed due to various factors.

Because he did not respond to the treatment, there was no other option than to amputate the leg. Babs hold back the tears when she tells about the kindness she and Andries experienced from Dr. Ndzeru and Dr. Austin Mulondo, the head of clinical services at Parys District Hospital, because after months of pain these doctors went out of their way to help Andries.

When they visited Dr. Ndzeru four weeks ago at Boitumelo, he promised that he would make a plan to help. And then one day – to their great surprise, Dr. Mulondo stopped. in front of the couple’s home in Vredefort. With his own car he picked them up because they had no transport, and brought them to the Parys district hospital where it was arranged that dr. Ndzeru could do the amputation here.

They were looked after with such care by all the staff of the Parys hospital including the CEO of the hospital, Ms Malinga. The operation was a success and Andries said last week that for the first time he had no pain. Also for Babs who had to see his suffering day after day, this is a great relief.

“Our hearts overflow with gratitude for the difference these doctors and the management and staff of Parys Hospital have made in our lives.””They were very good to us,” Babs says, silently wiping the tears from her cheeks that tell of their months of hardship.

Difficult months in which friends such as Amanda van Dyk, Susan van Schalkwyk, Suzette de Beer, her sister Jackie Kruger, and Mariëtte Pittaway from the DA supported  Babs. Also Andries’ brother and his wife, Chris and Lettie Calitz, and his cousins were there for them. They are grateful to the ambulance staff, especially Eunice and Jackson for their help, Ms. Malinga and her staff, and doctors Ndzero and Mulondo who went out of their way to show their care in more than words despite challenges. But above all they thank the Lord.
