When taking on not one but four chess players at the same time, you must be a fast thinker with a watchful eye and a few tricks up your sleeve.
Former Free State chess champion, Ernest Phakoe, showed how it is done when he took on Willem Janse van Vuuren, father and son Werner and Eben Ernst, and Willem Erasmus at Lekker Bistro last week during the weekly Wednesday social chess night.

Twenty-two players gathered around the chess boards that evening, and what a pleasant sight to see the enthusiasm for the game growing week after week.
Although Ernest got his opponents in checkmate on three boards, Willem got the better hand against Ernest in their match.
Playing four games at once was a first for Ernest – believe it or not! He started playing in 1984. A friend, Mr Roberts, taught him how to play. At 57, Ernest is one of the strongest players in the Tumahole Chess club.
The previous week, another Tumahole Chess Club member, Paul Tsatsi, challenged Pieter-Ruan Pieters, father and daughter Hugh and Hanna du Preez, and Danny Botes. Paul showed them why he, too, is regarded as one of his club’s masters.

Don’t miss out when the group gather at Lekker Bistro at 18:00 on Wednesdays.
Bring your chess board; play is free. Come and enjoy a game of chess together with other players.
