2 foreigners arrested after damaging police property

Police responded further by beefing themselves up with input from the Flying Squad, K9, TNT (Amabherete), and other police units

VANDERBIJLPARK. – Two foreign suspects were arrested and charged on several counts on Monday afternoon in Vanderbijlpark.

The pair were arrested for defeating the ends of justice, intimidation, damage to police property, damage to business property, and organizing an unauthorized march.
This happened after police searched alleged foreign nationals believed to be Nigerians at Vaal Mall. Police say they were conducting a random stop-and-search operation triggered by a tip-off.
All hell broke loose when the searched men allegedly called their ‘other brothers’ who later blocked the route for the police vehicle and damaged its communication radio. Police spokesperson Sergeant Gertrude Makhale says that, by the time they broke the radio, back-up had already been contacted.
A quick response resulted in the rescue of the police officers from the group. Police thought it was all over, but the alleged foreign nationals mobilised themselves and marched to the Vanderbijlpark Police Station where they wanted to ‘voice their grievances.’
Police responded further by beefing themselves up with input from the Flying Squad, K9, TNT (Amabherete), and other police units. These made their way to the Vanderbijlpark Police Station in reaction to the rumour that there was a shootout between police and foreign nationals.
However, Makhale says there was no shootout at the scene: “We arrested two suspects. There was no shootout between the suspects and the police. The suspects were arrested for defeating the ends of justice, damage to police property, damage to business property, an unauthorised march and intimidation.” Police are still looking for other suspects. Sedibeng Ster could not get comment from the group at the time of going to print.
