Calling house a home

Calling house a home

On Friday morning, 230 title deeds were handed to residents of Rammulotsi, Viljoenskroon, who now are homeowners after the full freehold title deeds, (spon-sored by Absa, OOBA Home Loans, and Reinet, an overseas sponsor), were handed to them who have been living as tenants in their own homes – some for generations.

They now have the privilege of no longer going to a house but going home – a life-changing moment.

The title deeds presentation forms part of the Free Market Foundation’s (FMF) Khaya Lam (My Home) Land Reform Project. The deeds are funded through the generosity of businesses and individuals.

This initiative delivers home ownership to township residents by facilitating the conversion of council-owned rental properties into freehold title – at no cost to the recipients or the local council, who partnered in the project. With the FMF’s Khaya Lam Project “dead capital” is turned into “dynamic capital” by empowering individuals with a valuable asset.

Friday’s function was attended by the Executive Mayor of Moqhaka, Cllr Motlogela Mokatse and other councillors, the Executive Mayor of the Fezile Dabi District Municipality, Cllr Dennis Khasidi, the Director of Human Settlement, Seithati Monya and Dikeledi Tau of Moqhaka, who explained to the recipients the value of owning the title deed to a property with her excellent presentation. Each recipient also received a food hamper.

The event was well organized by Tau, and hosted by Khaya Lam, represented by Searle and Lorna Sacks, who took over from Perry Feldman who sadly passed away in 2021. Perry was the Project Manager for the Khaya Lam Project with his wife, Veronica, on his side. His death was a terrible personal loss to his friends and colleagues at the Free Market Foundation, and a devastating loss for the project where he touched so many lives. * On Monday 14 February Khaya Lam also hosted a title deed handout ceremony in Edenville where 205 title deeds were handed out to recipients. The function was attended by guests of honour, Yvonne Raboroko, who explained to the recipients the importance of owning a title deed, as well as Cllr Matjhini Toyi (Ward 18, Nagwathe), who also received the title deed to his house. The sponsor for the Edenville handout was Rising Tide, an overseas sponsor.
