R501 road past Doornfontein now closed

The part of the R501 road between Carletonville and Potchefstroom that leads past Doornfontein is now closed.

The road was closed by Sanral (the South African National Roads Agency) just more than an hour ago. The road was closed indefinitely because of the danger posed by the sinkhole next to it. The road has been closed in such as way that no-one can pass on the side of the new barriers. Extra barriers are also in the process of being put up. The road is closed from the direction of Carletonville at extension of Carletonville’s Onyx Drive in onto the R501, and on the other side just past Doornfontein Village. People from the area who need to move to Welverdiend or Deelkraal, must use the road between Oberholzer and Welverdiend. Longer distance travelers can also use this road (called Station Road on Google Maps) or use the N14 or N12 to bypass Carletonville entirely.
