How to vote, and where

Voters are reminded that they must vote in the ward where they are registered when they go to cast their ballots on Monday, 1 November, as these are local government elections. Voting stations will be open from 07:00 to 21:00.

Cllr Shirley Vermaak, who serves on a liaison committee with the Independent Electoral Commission, advises people who are unsure which voting station to visit, to send their ID number on an SMS to 32810. This is because there have been changes in some ward boundaries.

Saal de Jager explains that most of Parys town falls under Ward 12, which is divided into three voting districts – Parys Library, Parys Town Hall and NG Suid. Voters living more or less in the western area of Parys and south of Breë Street are now in Ward 10 and cast their ballots at the NG Wes c/o Kort and Grens Street. Those on the northern side of Breë Street, up to Noorder Street, are still in Ward 14 and vote at the Rotary Club in Rotary Avenue in Saligna.

Voters living in a small section of Parys town, south of Third Avenue, cast their ballots at BASA Factory. On the western side of town voters living mainly in Oudewerf and on the Golf Island south of the river are in Ward 7. Their voting station is the Tent opposite Parys District Hospital. Voters will receive three ballot papers – one for ward candidate, one for the local council and the third for the district council (in this case Fezile Dabi). Special voting will take place on Saturday 30 October, and Sunday the 31st between 08:00 and 17:00.

“IEC staff will visit retirement villages and private homes on those days to enable elderly and infirm residents to cast special votes,” said Vermaak.

“However, this applies only to people who registered for special votes before 4 October. Voters who are unable to visit their voting station on Monday will be able to do so this weekend – also provided that they registered in time.”
