Ngwathe officials are determined to stop people from dumping rubbish everywhere. They recently started on the road past Basa Park to Schonkenville and Koppies. “When our notice boards go up, fines will follow,” warns Ms Phumzile Nhlapo, the director of community services. “Residents can help by photographing culprits dumping illegally, so they can be charged,” said the councillor, Shirley Vermaak. Last month, Gazette reported that rubbish was being dumped on both roadsides again, as happened two years ago. The DA got Ngwathe to clear the unhealthy mess and erect notices once again as the previous boards were stolen. Private domestic waste collectors started dumping rubbish there again, especially from Pomona households. They should have transported the refuse to the municipal landfill site on the Weiveld Dover road. “We have procured new notice boards warning against littering,” said Nhlapo.

“Once these are up, we will lay charges, and arrests and fines will follow.” Ngwathe cleaned up a two-kilometre road verge two weeks ago as part of its new Adopt-a-spot cleaning programme. But within days, refuse was being dropped there again.
