Criminal dumping goes on

Criminal dumping goes on

Municipal officials and councillors are asking the public’s help with the littered roadsides on both sides of the road to Schonkenville and Koppies. Gazette reported last week that rubbish was increasingly being dumped on both sides of the road. DA councillor Shirley Vermaak recalled that this had happened two years ago, but the DA got Ngwathe to clear the mess and put up notices against it. “This worked for a time, but the signboards were stolen and dumping began again, creating an unsightly and unhealthy mess.” The reason seems that some private collectors of domestic waste offer to remove rubbish from especially Pomona households, giving the impression that they would dump it at the municipal landfill site on the Weiveld/Dover road. Instead they take a short cut by simply creating new rubbish heaps beyond BASA Park on the Koppies road.

This a causing a serious health and fire risk to residents from Basa Park and the nearby living ommunity, says Cllr Hendrik Fieland from Ward 13. He also pleaded with the comunity of Parys not to use the road as a dumping site. Ngwathe cleaned up a two-kilometre long road verge last week, as part of its Adopt-a-spot cleaning programme.

But within days, loads full of refuse – even some old furniture – was being dropped there again. “Residents can help by photographing culprits in the act, so that they can be charged and fined,” said an official yesterday. You can send the photos to councillors Shirley Vermaak on 082 461 3680 or Arnold Schoonwinkel on 084 549 3384.
