Tinnitus is the medical name for a noise that is perceived as coming from within the ear or may sound like it is in your head. Tinnitus is not described as an isolated illness, but may be a sign or symptom of an underlying problem.
What does it sound like:?
People may hear different sounds like a constant ringing, whistling, buzzing, humming or roaring noise in the ears.
What causes tinnitus:
The most common cause of tinnitus is hearing loss that happens with aging. It can also be caused by living or working around loud noise. Some other causes include:
•A buildup of ear wax
•Side effect of some medications
•High blood pressure
•A neck or jaw problem
•Extreme stress
What should I do if I have tinnitus:
It is a good idea to visit an audiologist to test your hearing to determine whether hearing loss can be the reason for the tinnitus. If there is a hearing loss, a hearing aid can be fitted to help reduce the tinnitus. Audiologists can also help you with tinnitus counselling.
