Heatwave – Take precautions

With the heatwave currently being experienced across several parts of the country, ER24 is urging people to be cautious.

Many people are still on holiday and out and about. They are urged to reconsider their plans if it involves being outdoors for long periods of time.

ER24 has attended to incidents over the past few weeks involving people who were affected by the heat. Just recently a woman had to be airlifted off Table Mountain by Skymed after having a heat stroke.

Rescue technicians from Metro Rescue went up to where the woman was. The woman was in a critical condition.

She was treated, stabilised and airlifted back down where she was handed over to ER24 paramedics.

People are urged to remember that heat exhaustion can lead to serious complications. Severe heat exhaustion could lead to heat stroke and that may in turn result in a person losing consciousness, experiencing seizures or going into cardiac arrest.

ER24 is urging people to monitor those who are experiencing a severe headache, weakness or disorientation, muscle cramps, nausea or vomiting or severe thirst. Symptoms may also include the absence of sweating due to dehydration and confusion.

If these symptoms persist, medical assistance should be sought as soon as possible.

Tips:

• Water is number one on the list. Remember to stay hydrated.
• Try to stay out of direct sunlight. If you are outside, seek shade or shelter. Also remember to use sunscreen for extra protection.
• Wear loose clothing, a wide brimmed hat if outside and sunglasses.
• If you are in an office or at home, ensure that the area around you is well ventilated.
• Do not let children play outside in direct sunlight. Ensure that they are hydrated.
• Keep an eye on babies and the elderly.
