Members of We Care found this interesting animal the past week in Parys.
It is called a Legless Skink and is in fact a lizard, not a snake.
They are often confused with their serpent relatives.
There are about 30 species in Southern Africa with the Cape Legless Skink, the Giant Legless Skink and the Thin-tailed Legless Skink the most common to be found.
You will find them mostly underground, using their enlarged and hardened “nose” to push their way forward through earth and leaf litter.
You will see them mostly after heavy rains.
Species such as the Spotted Harlequin Snake and the Common Purple Gloss Snake feed on Legless Skinks.
