There’s joy in the act of giving

Christmas day is when Christians all over the world celebrate the birth and life of Jesus Christ.

People celebrate 25 December in various ways. Some families start the day by going to church while others begin by opening gifts. Some people quickly go shopping before all the stores close.

Nonetheless, this day is to honour Jesus and, most importantly, to thank God for blessing humankind with His only begotten son and the gift of life (John 3:16).

While we prepare for this day, we should consider the kind of man Jesus was. We should celebrate this day by asking ourselves, “What would Jesus do (W.W.J.D)?”

Jesus was and still is a man of compassion and humility. He also possessed attributes like generosity, love, forgiveness and servitude. On 25 December, therefore, we should display these characteristics towards our families, friends, acquaintances and even strangers. We should reach out to the underprivileged, in particular. Some people spend Christmas alone, with no food or gifts to unwrap.

This year, let’s do something different from our annual family traditions. Let us celebrate Christmas with others, giving freely to others as Christ would have done.

“It’s not how much we give but how much love we put into giving,” said Mother Theresa.
