Watch out for dangerous potholes
As in Parys, drivers in Carletonville should keep their eyes peeled on the road, so they do not damage their vehicles by the growing number of dangerous potholes. A councillor of Carletonville, Mr Carlos Rebelo, says he recently put in a claim to the Merafong City Local Municipality after his son hit a particularly dangerous …
On Monday, Rebelo took the Herald to the right-hand lane of Dolomite Street towards the R500, after the turn-off to Talc Street. The pothole is more than 10 cm deep and has a very sharp edge on one side.
“My son was picking up people from church early in the morning. Luckily, he could drive slowly to the 007-complex for help,” Rebelo says.
He noted that it would cost the municipal insurer much more to repair the tyre than it would have cost Merafong to fill the pothole in the first place.
“I was fortunate that I knew how the processes work and could claim from the municipality, but what about those who are not so well informed?” he says.
Meanwhile, there are also several dangerous potholes in Vaal Street near Goudwes School.
What makes them particularly dangerous for drivers is that they are spread across the width of the road. At least one of the potholes is so deep that it could seriously damage a car.
Another resident of Carletonville, Mrs Antionette Schoombie, also drew the Herald’s attention to a deep pothole next to Avondgloor in Aloe Street.
“This hole is right across the entrance where many elderly people with wheelchairs are dropped off and ambulances stop. I have been reporting it to the municipality for years. A friend who was working there when I reported it, left two years ago already,” she complains.
