Recently there have been many carjacking incidents that have been reported throughout the province, according to the North West South African Police Services. Captain Sam Tselanyane, NW police spokesperson says that some motorists have been stopped and robbed of their goods by people who pretended to be traffic or police officials. Also, unsuspecting motorists have been in incidents where their vehicles are hijacked.

For instance, last month (August 2019) a 29-year-old victim was stopped in Sun City by two men who were travelling in a bakkie. It is alleged that these two men pretended to be asking for directions. They then pointed a firearm at the victim and demanded his vehicle keys. The suspects then drove off with the victim’s vehicle.

The police strongly advise motorists to be cautious when driving or stopping on the side of the road. “Motorists are requested to be vigilant and to report suspicious persons or vehicles at the nearest police stations”, says Tselanyane.

The police urge motorists to apply the following safety tips:

  • Plan your route before travelling and let someone know what route you’ll be taking. Also, let the person(s) know approximately what time you will arrive at your destination.
  • Check your tyres regularly and ensure that your car is well-maintained as it will be less likely to break down.
  • Avoid distractions while driving, like using a phone.
  • Always check the rear view mirror to see whether you are being followed or not. If you suspect that you’re being followed, drive to the nearest police station or a busy public area.
  • When approaching a red traffic light, slow down so that by the time you reach it, it will turn green, especially at night.
  • When stopping behind another vehicle, you should leave half a vehicle length space in front so that if necessary, you can make an emergency escape.
  • If possible, avoid driving in the dark as hijackers may stage a minor accident.
  • Never pick up or offer a lift to hitchhikers or strangers.
  • Avoid driving in unfamiliar places, late at night or during the early hours of the morning.
