Mario Coetzee (47) and his son, Marlu (then 8) was attacked inside their bedroom while sleeping early Thursday morning (18 April). Mario’s daughter, Marizé (7) was also in the room when the attack occurred. She was not harmed.
Mario’s parents, Paul and Nellie Coetzee, also live in the house and were woken up by screams from the room where Mario and his children were sleeping. While investigating, Nellie was hit over the head by one of the suspects, who then fled through the kitchen door.
Paul described the room as a blood bath. Mario was hit multiple times in his face and on his body. He sustained multiple fractures in his face and jaw and his knee was also fractured. Marlu was hit in the face with an object and also sustained facial fractures. They were both rushed to separate hospitals in Potchefstroom and Johannesburg for medical treatment.
Both father and son were discharged and were able to celebrate Marlu’s ninth birthday on Friday, 26 April.
Mario’s family is asking for financial support since Mario has no medical aid.
