Who is polluting the Vaal River? Is it just the municipalities and industries, or are there others?

These were the questions that emerged during last week’s Parys Business Network meeting. Disturbing information came to the fore during the gathering.
A company that services septic tanks was considering investing in a second truck because of the workload last year. In the past two months, however, they have had only two call-outs.
One of these was far from the river.
The question now arises – are there people who are deliberately dumping into the river at night, knowing that someone else is going to get the blame?
This may also explain the reports of a stinking river early in the morning.
To uncover where the pollution is coming from, those in attendance suggested a forum to investigate, monitor and aid in remedying the situation. The proposed participants could include the local municipalities, service providers, NGOs and concerned parties.
The service providers will now provide detailed monthly reports of the collection services they have provided.
The registers at the sewerage works dumping site will also be cross-referenced with all the records. Compliance officers will do checks at places that are red-flagged.
The participants agreed that, in the event of accidental spillage, the concerned party should be able to approach the forum to report and discuss a solution and, in so doing, prevent the risk of prosecution.
They also requested that a water contingency plan should be in place in the event of a crisis.
At this stage, the groups involved have decided not to name and shame. In future, however, records will be scrutinised and non-compliance will result in the wrath of the community and prosecution.
The pollution by municipalities and industry is currently being tackled on many fronts.
If you are aware of any illegal activities taking place, please report it (you can stay anonymous) to Vaal Action Group on 084 269 2493.
To those who are acting legally, the forum extended their appreciation and wanted to acknowledge them on public lists as responsible citizens/companies.
Below is the NGOs’ and concerned groups committed to improving the Vaal River environment. Bear in mind that their members are all volunteers and cannot be expected to make an impact without the full support of the community.
