Blankets taking shape as knitting fever grips Potch

Knitting and crocheting enthusiasts from all over the world celebrated ‘Worldwide Knit in Public Day’ on Saturday, the 13th of June.

Knitting and crocheting enthusiasts from all over the world celebrated ‘Worldwide Knit in Public Day’ on Saturday, the 13th of June.

Together, Sparkling Auto Care Centre, Romy’s Habby, Baillie Park Spar and the Potchefstroom Herald ensured the local community could also click their needles in support of the global initiative. The five-hour knit-a-thon was hosted at the Sparkling Web Cafe where balls of wool and needles were handed out to willing participants and interested passers-by.

Once finished, their squares were handed in to Marissa at Sparkling Auto who is in the process of organising another day to sew the squares together. The campaign is set to benefit the less fortunate throughout Potchefstroom in line with Mandela Day on 18 July. Those wanting to hand in squares, can drop them off at Sparkling Auto in Walter Sisulu Street, at Romy’s Habby near Turkstra, or at the Potchefstroom Herald offices on the corner of Piet Uys and Govan Mbeki Road.

Another member of the community, Belinda Vermaak-Kleynhans handed in more than 100 squares on Monday. She and her sister, Debbie, became aware of the knitting craze and, together, the Prime Properties duo got in on the act.

“We are challenging other estate agencies to match or better our contributions,” laughed Belinda.
