BREAKING: VAAL TRIANGLE – Good news for Emfuleni residents is that their power supply will not be cut off come March 8. Emfuleni Local Municipality Mayor, Jacob Khawe, this morning told a media briefing attended by the 90.6 FM Stereo News Team ELM has reached an agreement with Eskom. The power utility threatened to cut off electricity to the Emfuleni municipal areas from March 8 due to non-payment of debt. Khawe said currently the municipality owes Eskom a debt of more than R800 million. He said Eskom wanted the municipality to pay this debt off in a year’s time, but they came to an agreement yesterday that they have five years to pay this debt. According to the mayor, the biggest cause of this debt is due to a lack of discipline from the municipality’s side, but also residents and companies that do not pay their bills as they should.
Just before the media briefing this morning, the mayor and the Municipal Manager attended a meeting with Rand Water whom they owe around R400 million. The MM said they have also reached an agreement Rand Water on how their debt will be paid. The mayor assured residents that the municipality is doing everything in its power to ensure that they do not have to panic about water or electricity being cut. More to follow on this story.
