A bright day dawned for Parys when the Nal’ibali (a national reading-for-enjoyment organization to spark the child’s potential through reading and storytelling) delegation from Cape Town and Johannesburg stepped onto the shores of Parys in Schonkenville on Saturday 27 May to launch a new reading club. The community of Schonkenville was overwhelmed with the visitors who took the event to the streets, inviting all the kids of the neighborhood to join in the fun as they took a walk-about.
The event was filled with the spirit of Ubuntu at the end of the celebrations of Africa Month. A well told story outlining the importance of the values of Ubuntu and how those values can be best applied in the real world. This was smoothly done by the Executive head of the Parys Library and motivational speaker, Mrs. Lindiwe Lodada.
About 115 children enjoyed themselves in leaps and bounds of happiness and laughter through learning how to read, rhyme and storytelling.
The organizers of the event, the “Nal’ibali Schonkenville Funda Leaders”, would like to express their gratitude to the NG Kerk in Schonkenville, Pick ’n Pay Parys and all the informal businesses of Schonkenville for the support they have shown for the initiative by providing the venue and refreshments.
