Two local Parys stand-up paddle (SUP) boarders, Bertrand van den Berg and Philip Claassens, joined a team of international SUP’ers to complete a first descent down the famous Zambezi River in the Batoka Gorge below Victoria Falls on stand-up paddle boards.
The section of white water is renowned for having the biggest commercially rafted whitewater rapids in the world.
Stand-up paddle boarding on whitewater is a fairly new sport in South Africa and consists of paddlers standing on a board similar, but larger than a surfboard and paddling with a single blade through whitewater.
The team consisted of South African, Zimbab- wean and American paddlers who completed the descent in early November 2016 with great success Z not only in terms of funds raised thus far Z but with the quality of SUP-able whitewater found on the Zambezi.
The first descent mission was completed in aid of Care for Wild, a non-profit organisation that cares for orphaned rhinos Z the victims of ongoing rhino poaching. Every cent raised is in aid of Care for Wild. For more information on the project and how to support it, visit www.standup4rhinos.org.
