State of disaster being declared over Carletonville sinkholes

A state of disaster should be declared as a result of sinkhole formation in the Carletonville municipal area.

The sinkhole adjacent to the 007 shopping complex that damaged the main water supply line to Carletonville in June last year. This was one of the most disastrous sinkholes that has struck the area recently.

The sinkhole adjacent to the 007 shopping complex that damaged the main water supply line to Carletonville in June last year. This was one of the most disastrous sinkholes that has struck the area recently.
During a council meeting of 27 October, councillors decided to follow this route because of the numerous sinkholes that have recently caved in at various places in Merafong and their consequences.
Various major sinkholes were listed in the council report as reasons for the state of disaster.
In one instance, funding is needed to permanently address the problems that occurred in June 2015, when a large sinkhole broke the supply line on the side of the reservoir across the road from the 007 shopping complex in Carletonville. Since then, water has been supplied directly from the high-pressure Rand Water bulk system, which leads to random burst pipes that contribute to severe water losses.
Khutsong’s main reservoir was also decommissioned in July 2015 after it could only be filled up to 25 per cent of its designed capacity due to a huge leakage and doline formations in the area. Water supply to Khutsong was only re-established after
a bypass system was built. The Department of Water and Sanitation approved a business plan in which R70 million would be allocated over a period of three financial years to deal with this problem.
Another sinkhole with huge consequences occurred on 1 August this year at the Adatta bulk supply line which feeds the entire Khutsong Extensions 4 and 5 as well as Welverdiend.
Since then, many residents have had to source their water supply from Jojo tanks that are filled via water tankers.
Other issues that were noted are the collapse of the sewer outfall in Khutsong Extension 3 due to a sinkhole, a sinkhole on the side of Bluebell Street in Carletonville, one on the side of Onyx Street in Carletonville, collapsed sewer lines in Khutsong Extension 2 (Skopas) and issues at the Khutsong Hostel water tower.
To deal with the issues, a task team, made up of representatives from the municipality, Gauteng CoGTA, Gauteng Treasury, the West Rand District Municipality and the Department of Water and Sanitation has already been formed and business plans have been developed to seek further funding to deal with the issues.
