Sarel Cilliers held their athletics day on a bright and sunny Monday, with a brief break in the weather. The top athletes then left last week for the inter-schools athletics meeting in Vryheid.
The learners performed exceptionally well and brought home a number of medals. Well done to O Mdinisi (200m U/19), B Mchunu (800m U/19), L Jam-Jam (400m U/19), S Zuma (shot put U/17), D Herren (discuss U/17), F Ndaba (400m U/17), S Zondo (high jump U/17), T Baatjies (400m and 500m U/15), S Madi (800m U/17) and T Griffith (1500m U/17) for winning their events and making the school proud.
Valentine’s Day was a huge success, with the students coming to school in civvies. ‘SWAG’ was the theme for the day. There were many creative dressers, much to the delight and amusement of the learners. There was a cake sale, a dance competition, Valentine’s market, and in the evening, a Valentine’s Day dance.
It was a welcome break from the weather and the learners thoroughly enjoyed the day. Well done to all the organisers.
Friday was the start of the Orange Grove / Sarel Cilliers Rugby Day. The weather conditions were deplorable and it was a wet, muddy weekend. The visiting teams embraced the conditions, and the rugby players splashed and slid their way from one end of the field to the other. The fields were waterlogged, but this did not prevent the junior teams from playing on Friday.
Scores: Sarel U/14-B team 22 – Toti 26. ‘Man of the Match’ – Mlondi Mlangeni.Sarel’s third team 20 – Ixopo 0. The fixture was broadcast live on Digi TV and there were visiting rugby teams from far and wide. Sky Shabalala from East Coast Radio attended, coaching one of the junior teams. Unfortunately, the weather did not let up and conditions became worse and worse as the fields became muddier and muddier. The Rugby Union halted play on Saturday morning as a result, with all further games cancelled.
Sarel Cilliers thanks all their supporters, visiting teams and coaches, as well as sponsor Orange Grove for their support this last weekend. It was wet and muddy and an adventure not to be forgotten!
Sarel Cilliers will be hosting Greytown this weekend and we hope for better weather and a drier field.
