DUNDEE KZN: Where’s the new main road that was paid for?

The asphalt road was graded last year, but no upgrading has been done since.

Frustrated Marikana residents in Sithembile have been left with a mud-spattered main road for years. This after a Municipal Infrastructure Grant (MIG) approval in 2020/21 for the construction of an asphalt road, to be implemented by Endumeni Municipality.

Almost a year later, after the contractor (Quiet Storm Trading) was granted funds via MIG, residents in this area still have an unfinished road. What used to be the construction site is now vacant land with overgrown grass, with no contractors in sight.

The asphalt road was graded last year, but no upgrading has been done since. Marikana resident Andile Mthembu commented that: “The condition of the roads in our area has worsened. “The asphalt road is the main road entering into Marikana and we all use it daily. However, getting into my driveway has become difficult with all the huge stones left by the contractors. When it rains, you can’t drive on the roads and what is more frustrating is that the municipality grant paid out for the construction of this road. The contractors are nowhere to be seen, so what’s going on?” Endumeni Technical Services were unavailable for comment at the time of going to press.
