BAIC South Africa has launched its B40 Plus

"It has been tested in almost every condition, altitude, terrain and application over this time, leading to the claim that it was born in the battlefield and perfected in the real world," said BAIC.

“It has been tested in almost every condition, altitude, terrain and application over this time, leading to the claim that it was born in the battlefield and perfected in the real world,” said BAIC.

The design certainly is bold and in your face, and offers an attractive alternative to off-road and 4×4 enthusiasts.

BAIC said its sound-dampening technology, Liquid Application Sound Deadening (LASD), increases the application area in a vehicle by 50%. Thus, with all the features, including a six-speaker audio system, dual air conditioning, reverse camera, a multi-information display and the rest, travelling on- and off-road will be a pleasant experience.

Off-road capability

Basil Costa, the senior manager for sales and marketing, said, “The B40 Plus is more than capable off-road. The testing on extreme environmental adaptability included a process called ‘5 high & 1 drought’, which included high temperature, high altitude, high humidity, high cold, high salt content and, of course, a drought. This stringent testing process ensures adaptability to extreme conditions 10% higher than regular passenger vehicles.”

The front suspension is a double wishbone/coil spring independent one. At the rear is a five-link/coil spring non-independent suspension. Ground clearance is 210mm, with approach angle being 37 degrees, departure angle 31 degrees and ramp-over angle 23 degrees.

The mechanical central transfer case and rear differential lock offer improved driver control in difficult conditions.

The B40 Plus will be available with either a 2.0-litre petrol or 2.0-litre diesel engine. The petrol unit will offer 160kW. The diesel output is 110kW and 350Nm.

The B40 Plus comes standard with ABS, EBD and Electronic Parking Brake (EPB). Some models will also offer Electronic Stability Programme (ESP), Emergency Brake Assist (EBA), Traction Control System (TCS), Hill Ascent Control (HAC) and Hill Descent Control (HAC).

The B40 Plus also has a built-in cage anti-roll body structure and anti-roll bar framework.

Pricing starts at R549 500 and goes up to R629 500 for the top-of-the-range offering. This includes a five-year/120 000km warranty. Competitive service plan options are available. Service intervals are 15 000km/12 months for both the petrol and diesel models.
