VRYHEID KZN: Make your Christmas plastic free

According to the Plastic Pollution Coalition toxic chemicals leach out of plastic and are found in the blood and tissue of nearly all of us.

IF you are not yet aware that plastic is bad for the environment then you might be living
under a rock somewhere.
In case you have not heard, plastic cannot biodegrade; it breaks down into smaller and
smaller pieces.
According to the Plastic Pollution Coalition toxic chemicals leach out of plastic and are found
in the blood and tissue of nearly all of us. Exposure to them is linked to cancers, birth defects,
impaired immunity, endocrine disruption and other ailments. Stop the use of plastic this
Christmas and give plastic-free gifts.
We listed our top four:
Mason jars
Mason jars are perfect gifts because not only are they recyclable, unlike plastic they can be
filled with food, another gift, face clothes or even dried flowers.
Healthy snacks
Snacks such as nuts, biltong, dried fruit are the perfect Christmas gift. Make sure they are healthy
snacks and wrap them in a mason jar or in trendy brown paper.
Books
Books as a gift will never go out of fashion, buy them, keep them or gift them but get them.  One
Google search lead us to page entitled, The Importance of Books where the authors have found that
around 130 million books have been published in the history of humanity. They say, 'A heavy reader
will at best get through 6 000 in a lifetime. Most of them won’t be much fun or very memorable.
Books are like people; we meet many but fall in love very seldom. Perhaps only thirty books will ever
truly mark us. They will be different for each of us, but the way in which they affect us will be
similar.'

Aaaah, and our favourite, succulent plants. These are not only pretty to look at but will last a
lifetime. In fact they say one can forget about a succulent plant and will still flourish.  What's more
succulent gardens and terrariums can brighten any indoor space.
