[DIARY]: There’s lots to do in Newcastle this weekend

From a model aircraft 'fly-in' to a charity golf day, Newcastle's entertainment scene will buzz this weekend.

Free weekly parkrun: Work out on a Saturday morning in a beautiful place, while meeting new people. The Grey Goose parkrun is a free, weekly and volunteer-led five kilometer run/walk which takes place from 8am, at the Grey Goose Game Lodge. Contact Wonda Wilson on 082 572 3336 for details.

Retrenchment Support Group: If you have recently been retrenched, you are welcome to come and join others who find themselves in the same situation, in order to encourage each other. This group will meet on Mondays from 5.30pm at the Newcastle (Ferrum) Swimming Pool hall.

Newcastle Model Aircraft Club: March 5 to 8 – The Newcastle Model Aircraft Club is hosting the Rand Model Aircraft Club Fly-in at Newcastle Airport. Flying will take place between 8am and 1pm each day, weather permitting. Pilots will be flying turbine jets, as well as large scale model aircraft. NMAC invites those who are interested in remote control flying or in joining the club, to attend this event. There is no entrance fee, but those interested in attending should call Trevor on 083 647 6399 so he can assist with entrance to the Newcastle Airport. The event is covered by NMAC, Newcastle Municipality and SAMAA rules. Please bring along a reflective vest if possible.

Chinese New Year Charity Cup: March 7 – The Newcastle Chinese Golf Club is hosting a charity golf day at the Newcastle Golf Club. The event starts at 10am, and format of play will be IPS. Entry fee is R200 pp and will include a light meal. For entries, carts and caddy bookings at the Pro Shop, call 034 318 7200. There are great prizes to be won.

Rabbit Run: March 18 – In support of raising funds for Marietjie Kade, a Rabbit Run will be hosted at Grey Goose Game Lodge (along the parkrun route). This will take place at 5.30pm at R50pp. All finishers of the 2.5km or 5km fun run/walk will be awarded medals. There will also be an Easter Egg Hunt for children, at R50 per child (pre-entry only). Memel Fun Run: April 4 – Challenge yourself and your dog! A 3km or 10km race, at R50pp and only R20 per dog, will take place in Memel. The race will start at Island Water Villa and will end at the Memel Farmers Hall. There will be a variety of stalls, plus live music and entertainment for children. The Class of 2003 Reunion: June 13 – All past pupils of Lincoln Heights Secondary School, Newcastle High School, St Oswald’s Secondary School and Ferrum High School are invited to the reunion on June 13. For those interested in attending, the cost is R250 per person, which covers meals, soft drinks and other expenses. The cut-off date for bookings and payment is at the end of March. Balvikas classes: The Sathya Sai Organisation of Newcastle conducts Balvikas classes every Monday from 5.15pm to 6pm at the Sathya Sai School, for children aged six to 15 years. The aim of these classes is to instill the five human values of truth, righteous conduct, peace, love and non-violence in the young minds of children. Hindi classes at SCATS: Those interested in learning the Hindi language are encouraged to attend classes every Sunday at the Sat-Chit-Ananda Temple in Fernwood, hosted by Aunty Barbie from 10am to 12pm. For details, call 034 312 7875 or Avikar Singh on 084 578 1355.

Hindi classes at Hindi Pracharni Sabha (HPS): Classes for children and adults who want to learn the Hindi language will begin on February 3. Classes will be held daily in the evenings for all grades; Hindi Bol students will learn oral communication only. Other students are registered and taught by qualified and experienced educators for all grades. These students write the annual National Examination with the Hindi Shiksha Sangh. Women’s World Day of Prayer: March 6 – The Newcastle Central Methodist Church (64 Harding Street) will host the Women’s World Day of Prayer at 10am – ‘Rise! Take your mat and walk.’ For more information, call 034 312 2185.

Meelad-Un-Nabee: March 8 – The family of Marhoomah Zooleka Dusthageer of Newcastle cordially invites you to celebrate the Meelad-Un-Nabee of beloved Prophet Hazrat Muhammad Mustufa and Agyariwie Shariff (of Hazrat Shaikh Abdul Qadir Jilani) at Musjid-E-Noorani on Boundary Road. This will begin at 10.30am sharp. The programme includes Qirath and Naaths. The guest speaker is Moulana Hafizu Qari Zahid Ahmed Zahidi.
