Parents and premises liable for underage drinking – SAPS

SAPS has warned vendors about selling alcohol to any consumer below the age of 18.

Hillcrest SAPS spokesperson, Captain Linzi Smith has stated all licensed premises owners and staff have a legal responsibility to prevent underage people from entering their licensed premises (unless they are exempted i.e. restaurants) and can refuse to sell alcohol to minors.

“Not only can the premises licence be removed, they are liable to pay a substantial fine. It is suspected that minors are producing fraudulent IDs, which are being produced at the entrances, thus giving them access to purchase alcohol,” said Capt Smith.

She pleaded with the community to make a habit of knowing where their children were going, during the day or night.

“If a minor is caught drinking or under the influence of alcohol or drugs at a licensed premises, the parents can also be charged criminally. It’s a parent’s duty to know where their underage child or children are going and with whom they are with,” added Capt Smith.
