A healthier way to enjoy Christmas lunch

We are not saying the festive season must be celebrated without a cold one, but alcohol is not always needed.

When the festive season rolls around with all its indulgence, sticking to a healthy eating plan can prove challenging to most.

If visions of sugar plums and five course meals are dancing around in your head, balance the richness with some fresh and healthy Christmas recipes which won’t leave you feeling deprived.

Try flavourful alternatives such as succulent chicken, which is a lean meat high in protein content. This plays a very important role in one’s health and also aids in sustaining your muscles.

Heart and healthy pasta dishes are the perfect foundation for a nutritious and satisfying meal, and also go well with so many other high-fibre foods such as vegetables and beans. You can get creative with this dish by adding fruits such as berries and pineapple.

A variety of green salads are a great way to add a colourful twist to your Christmas lunch. Salads are very easy to make at home and have multiple health benefits, while also making a substantial contribution to the prevention of disease.

A vital tip is to plan ahead: when choosing certain foods you will be preparing on the day of the festivities, this will allow you to be equipped and ready to enjoy the holiday.

When the festive season is in full flow, we often tend to drink more alcohol than the recommended daily allowance. We are not saying the festive season must be celebrated without a cold one or two, but alcohol is not always needed to have fun so.

If you prefer to have more health conscious drinks, here are three alternatives:

  1. Orange juice and lemonade: Instead of using bubbly (champagne), consider fresh orange juice and lemonade. This drink won’t leave you with a headache or sore throat in the morning.
  2. Pomegranate mojito: For the cocktail lovers out there, there are alternatives such as fresh pomegranate juice and soda water with a little added sweetness.
  3. Mulled apple juice: Rather than drinking traditional mulled wine, you can make your very own mulled apple juice, which is best served warm.
