[EDITOR’S NOTE] Community spirit is greater than the destruction of a tornado

Within hours, relief efforts were in full swing. This is the true power of a smaller community.

Dear Reader – a community in need is greater than the sum of all our differences. Nowhere, in my opinion, is this more evident than right here in our hometown.

In a scene worthy of any Hollywood blockbuster, a confirmed tornado ripped through the Waterval and deep rural areas of Utrecht, decimating homes in its destructive wake.

I received the call within an hour of the incident, and despite disbelief, hastened to file it online. While the wheels of the media machine churned, behind the scenes a disaster relief team began assembling.

Locals showed only deep empathy and a willingness to drop whatever they were doing to help this devastated community. From businesspeople to emergency and security members, there was no hesitation to heed a call for help.

Within hours, relief efforts were in full swing. This is the power of a true community.

As national media and various government departments woke up to the news, residents had already organised medical care, food, blankets and more for those whose homes had been destroyed.

In the days since, a relief group set up on WhatsApp is gaining traction as more and more residents offer donations and assistance. As the Newcastle Advertiser, we are proud to be associated with a community this selfless.
