[EDITOR’S NOTE] Will you make the ‘positive’ choice?

What do you love most about living in Newcastle? Is it the food, our weather or our people?

Dear Reader,

The most common misconception I hear about the news, and media in general, is that it’s always bad. While this may have a kernel of truth, especially in terms of service delivery, corruption and crime, for the most part community journalism is in a whole different league to national news.

The buzzword around community journalism is ‘hyperlocal’ – what this means is the community comes first, always. Pick up any national newspaper, and chances are you would be hard-pressed to find mention of Newcastle – unless of course, the municipality cannot afford to pay Eskom and the entity threatens to cut off electricity to the entire town…

In community newspapers, the true gems of the town shine through.

From children who excel at sport and academics, to local artists, chefs, bakers, musicians and athletes – there is a plethora of talent right here on our doorstep and it is our responsibility to ensure their stories are told.

We celebrate your achievements and highlight your successes because in a town as small as Newcastle, we stand together and support each other. While we may not have the bright lights and fancy frills of cities like Johannesburg and Durban, we have something infinitely more special – a sense of true community and family.

Regardless of how we, as a town or as a newspaper, are portrayed on social media or national media, the spirit of small-town living will always shine through in our community.

Recently, with the amount of negative publicity surrounding the Newcastle Municipality, it has become easy to get lost in the bad. However, it’s a conscious choice to focus on the good too.

What do you love most about living in Newcastle? Is it the food (a certain fish and chip business is known worldwide), our weather or our people?
