Judgement in Eskom case is a cold comfort

Dear Reader,

Newcastle will remain in the light… for now.

Our journalist has been travelling to Pietermaritzburg since the court case between the Newcastle Municipality and Eskom began last week.

For those of you who are following our social media, anxious to find out if we would have been left in the dark, the breaking news has been bittersweet.

Shortly after judgement was handed down, the municipality issued a self-congratulatory statement letting residents know about its ‘victory’.

This rubbed me the wrong way for several reasons.

Foremost was the fact that we would not have been in this position if the powers that be had actually done their jobs in the first place!

This seems to be the common sentiment among those who responded.

Why should we be congratulating the municipality when they haven’t paid their own bills?

This is no victory. It’s a poor attempt to divert the attention away from their own mistakes.

An entire town, on the verge of panic, trying to figure out how to cope if Eskom completely cut us off.

Is this neglect and disregard to law-abiding, rate paying citizens forgivable?
