[EDITOR’S NOTE] Town makes headlines for the wrong reasons

Dear Reader,

Will Eskom actually switch us off?

This seems to be the question most residents are asking, and as usual, we are only getting vague answers and promises which don’t seem to add up.

Protest action in our normally quiet town has seen a big spike upwards, and it’s clear the community is frustrated.

Among the litany of complaints against the Newcastle Municipality, it can now add another notch to its beleaguered belt: one that truly stinks.

Refuse is piling up in town and across residential streets, left to fester and rot as municipal workers face off against leadership for the non-payment of overtime due to them.

This ‘fight’ turned violent late last week, and our reporter was at the scene of chaos as municipal security shot into the crowd of municipal protesters, after the mayor was injured in the scuffle.

Yet again, we have made national news, and for all the wrong reasons.

The eyes of the nation are on us as the municipality prepares to battle Eskom – the case will be heard in court today (October 3).

I believe in preparing for any eventuality. With a small child at home, I cannot afford to take promises at face value and trust in those who have failed us constantly. So today, I will be charging my batteries, making sure there are enough candles and/or solar lights and hunkering down to face the inevitable.

What will you do if Eskom switches us off?
