Mpho ‘pops’ into town

He has solidified his mark on the industry by generating plenty of laughs and leaving sore abs in towns and cities across the country.

He’s no stranger to local television screens and loves making people laugh, and that’s the story of comedian, Mpho Popps.

Popps hosted his Black in My Day tour in Newcastle on Saturday, September 28. He embarked on his first ever one-man national tour in June, and has visited 14 cities and venues across South Africa since then.

Popps’s journey began in the casting line, on the national comedy search TV show So You Think You’re Funny?

This platform gave him the audience and reach he needed to put himself out there as a serious comedian.

Black In My Day is a nostalgic trip down memory lane, of how Popps grew up and all the experiences which have brought him to the point he’s at today.

It is a play on what life was like ‘back in the day’ as a black man and navigating those challenges. It is reflective on life in the ‘hood’, and drawing a comparison to flourishing in the suburbs.

He muses on the rising black middle class in South Africa and gives them a voice.

As a comedian, actor and businessman, Popps is a man of many talents.

Boasting great local and global appeal as a talented comic, he has packed venues and line-ups from his debut one man show Exhibit A, his annual Mpho Popps Birthday Comedy Special, Blacks Only, as well as a range of club tours and festivals.

He has solidified his mark on the industry by generating plenty of laughs and leaving sore abs in towns and cities across the country.

He showcases the great delivery, a talent for languages, as well as powerful punchlines which always leave crowds in stitches.

Popps debuted as an actor on the hit drama serious Ayeye, and starred in and executive produced a local film called Thina Sobabili, which was selected to represent South Africa at the Oscars and the Golden Globes.

He has also hosted the South African Music Awards, which solidified him as a comic with mass appeal on South Africa’s pop culture scene.

He has the ability to take real life situations and make them relatable and interesting through humour. He combines his intellectual wit and plug on pop culture to create a world full of laughter.

“My belief is that my talent and skill is not a show I put on, but an embodiment of my true self. This is who I am, all day, every day. My goal is to spread laughs and bring joy to audiences around the world,” he said.

Popps recently won the Headliner of the Year Award, at the Savanna Comics’ Choice Awards at the Lyric Theatre, Gold Reef City in Johannesburg, on September 7.
