During Arbor Week, the importance of trees is highlighted across the country and the world.

In fact, trees are such a pivotal part of our existence as the human race, they’ve been given a whole month to be celebrated, hence the creation of Arbor Month, during which communities are encouraged to plant trees.

Ward 8 Councillor, Magda Viktor, who has been extremely vocal against the unnecessary cutting down of trees in Vryheid, explained she would like to see new trees planted this Arbor Month, particularly where ‘old trees have fallen’.

“They create oxygen and clear pollutants from the air,” explained Kevin Halsted, who has a love for nature and understands the importance of trees. “With more trees around, we stand a much better chance in the fight against global warming.”

He also pointed out the Spekboom and its many beneficial qualities and effects, with the tree gaining attention on social media recently.

“This plant helps a lot in the fight against climate change,” he elaborated. “It removes carbon dioxide from the air like a sponge and improves the quality of the air that we breathe, and it’s so easy to grow. You just break a piece off and stick it in the ground and it grows with very little attention or maintenance.”

Commenting on Instagram, Carin Lombard said: “Totally agree with him. Trees are the most important thing we need in life.”
