ANC councillors walk out of day’s second meeting

Members of the ANC claimed they felt the Administrator was being completely sidelined.

After arriving late to Friday’s council meeting, ANC representatives only stayed a few minutes before leaving yet again.

It is alleged ANC councillors also walked out of an Executive Committee (Exco) meeting that morning, after disagreements arose between members of the party amid decisions brought forward by AbaQulusi Speaker of Council, Michael Khumalo.
At Friday’s council meeting, Director of Town Planning and Strategic Development, Stefan Landman was appointed to stand in as acting MM, in order for the meeting to move forward.

This is where the trouble seems to have started. An objection was raised by the ANC’s Cllr T.Z. Nkosi, who asked Landman to instead take his seat, as what was happening was ‘not in alignment with following instructions from the administrator’.
Members of the ANC claimed they felt the Administrator was being completely sidelined, despite his position and the fact that the municipality was currently under administration.

“The IFP was planning to appoint a Director for the Community Services Department from prospects who applied more than six months ago. We were very much against this and felt the process should be started over. When we tried to raise the matter before Council, the Speaker was simply ignoring my caucus, so there was nothing else for them to do but exit that meeting,” explained ANC leader, Zakhele ‘Zakes’ Buthelezi.
