Race day delivers adrenaline fuelled action

Racers were geared up in the pits, as they fired their engines in eagerness.

All eyes were on the Newcastle Oval Track at the weekend, as the anticipation of the monthly race day dawned.

Spectators arrived early to set up for the day, with hot coals calling out for the ‘braaivleis’ and a few cold ones in the cooler.

The results for the day were as follows:

Rookies: Stephan van der Merwe.

Go-karts: First – Lianie van Rooyen, second – Raeesa Cassim.

1600 stockrods: First – Melanie van Rooyen, second – Westley Wall, third – Shaun Bezuidenhout.

1660s: First – Wikie Bezuidenhout, second -Tiaan Buys, third – Mynhardt Myburgh.

2.1-litre modifieds: First – Pieter Bester Snr, second – Imraan Ameer, third – Rivelle Rooplall.

Hot rods: First – Pieter Bester Jnr, second – Hendrik van der Merwe, third – Rivelle Rooplall.

Tin tops: First – Imraan Ameer, second – Henk van Rooyen, third – Marcus Beeslaar.

V8s: Flip Gericke.

The next big event for the club is the SA Dirt National Championship, which takes place on October 5 at Newcastle Oval Track.

The annual event has been held at different provinces over the years, including the Eastern Cape and Mpumalanga, and Newcastle Oval Track’s spokeswoman, Zaakira Khan said the club was excited to host the event.

Racers competing in the event will be classified as follows:

Stockrods, 1600 modifieds, 2-litre modifieds, Lexus, 16V midgets, V8 flexis, heavy metals and hot rods.
Gates open at 10am and the autograph session is at 4pm.
