Where have all the doctors gone?

I’m very thankful that our community has medical doctors to take care of us

Good day, citizens of Ladysmith and surrounding areas. Welcome to the eighth month of the year. I can’t believe a big part of 2019 is gone! Before we can say “boo”, it will be New Year’s Eve.

Firstly, I would like to offer my congratulations to the Springboks for their second undefeated year in New Zealand; Zane Waddell for winning our country’s only gold medal in the men’s 50m backstroke final at the FINA World Championships in Gwangju, South Korea; and to Drakensberg Rugby Club for making the Murray Cup playoffs for the first time ever.

Nobody saw me last week. I was scarcer than the missing money from Bitcoin Wallets. I was a bit under the weather. And no, it had nothing to do with the Wrath of the Grapes. Every year, I get my annual cold, flu or bronchitis. I don’t know when it will pop up, but luckily I learned to recognise the symptoms and get myself to a doctor ASAP! The doctor listened to my heartbeat; checked my ears, nose and throat; and asked plenty of questions. The good news was that I could be saved. The bad news was that I needed an injection. I almost passed out when I saw the needle. “Cowboys don’t cry” I said to myself as I ground my teeth until it was over. And now I’m almost as right as rain.

I don’t know if you guys are aware of the fact that SA has a doctors’ shortage, especially in the public healthcare sector. And the doctors who are working there are overworked and tend to struggle. A lot of doctors move to the private sector and start their own practices or immigrate to a country with lucrative financial offers.

Those who stay in the country prefer to work in the urban areas. I’m very thankful that our community has medical doctors to take care of us. But here is the question: In a few years’ time, when they are starting to retire, who is going to take over their practices? I see that a lot of physio / occupational therapy practices have opened up in town these past few years. If they can do it, why not some doctors as well? PS: Swine flu broke out in the area last week.

Everyone, please be careful. Cheers!
