Dear Reader,

By now, you would have received your municipal rates/lights and water bills.

Were you just as shocked as I was? We all expect winter bills to be higher, owing to what the municipality says is higher electricity consumption.

But this current spike has residents fuming more than usual.

I spoke to a ratepayer the other day, and his bill shot up by 143 per cent. When he went to the municipality to query the amount, he was told to just pay it. He questioned whether the powers that be actually know what they are doing, and has vowed to take action.

In the past, Fred van Dyk championed the movement to take on the municipality about the massive price hikes we are being forced to pay.

After handing over a memorandum, and countless ratepayer meetings, Mr van Dyk realised answers were few and far between.

Sadly, his support from fellow ratepayers was mediocre at best.

With the latest bill shock, will residents stand together to demand proper answers? Will you be the driving force for change?
