Dear Reader,

While the frost gathers on the ground and the trees are stripped bare of their autumnal leaves, the temperature continues to drop.

There have been mornings when the thermometer itself seems to freeze at a solemn -2 degrees Celsius.

Winter is officially here, and if predictions can be believed, we are in for a long and icy-cold few months.

While the cold weather comes with shorter days and longer nights, and many can’t help but take note of the bleakness of the political and municipal leadership presently in Newcastle.

Currently, our mayor is on ‘special leave’. We have no deputy mayor nor speaker appointed, and the acting municipal manager is still in place.

A cursory glance through social media has shown most residents have no idea who to turn to for help with service delivery issues.

Phones often go unanswered and, with the exception of a few ward councillors who take pride in their positions, for the most part Newcastle’s elected ward councillors provide no relief.

When you are stuck in the dark and cold, with no water and no answers, the situation begins to look incredibly sombre.

Newcastle residents need answers, and we at the Newcastle Advertiser are committed to digging deeper and getting to the bottom of the problem, while still highlighting service delivery problems.

Your first port of call should always be the Newcastle Municipality, to report and log service delivery issues, but please also let us know of any problems you are experiencing in your area. Let us start pushing the right buttons!
