Be brave and speak up for what’s right

Dear Readers,

What does it mean to be brave?

To some, it means standing up for others, knowing the outcome may not always work in their favour. To others, it means speaking up with no fear, despite knowing the possible dangerous repercussions of their utterances.

Bravery is a complicated state of affairs, much like the goings-on in Newcastle at the moment. Last week, our Investigative Team released Part One of its expose, into the state of the Newcastle Municipality’s financial situation, and most of the comments received from our readers were positive.

While some lauded the team for bravery shown in publishing this expose, others wondered how the people allegedly involved had been allowed to get away with no repercussions and also highlighted further potential avenues of investigation.

This week, our team is delving deeper into this issue, so read more about it on pages 4 and 5.

On a more uplifting note, Youth Day and Father’s Day are around the corner, and we have an awesome feature on page 20 with heart-warming messages to some of our superhero dads.

If you’re stuck for gift ideas, we also compiled a list of some unique gifts to consider getting for your dad this year.

In my personal experience, it’s always hard choosing a gift that is both thoughtful and shows your dad how much you love him. It’s easy to fall back on the generic – gift vouchers especially!

I don’t think words and gifts matter more than actions though. My dad is my superhero – he is quietly supportive, will sacrifice everything he has for my family, and is humble to a fault.

This Father’s Day, I hope he knows his hard work has not been in vain. I am lucky enough to still have him in my life and for our child to have him as a grandfather. I am also lucky to have his strength, courage and unconditional love in my life.
