Millions did not make their voices heard

Apparently, out of the 9.8 million eligible voters in South Africa who did not register to vote, more than 60 per cent are between the ages of 18 to 29.

Dear Reader,

I read a disturbing article this week, which was based on the IEC’s voter registration.

Apparently, out of the 9.8 million eligible voters in South Africa who did not register to vote, more than 60 per cent are between the ages of 18 to 29.

According to the article, the reason for the drop in voter registration is unknown.

This does not sit well with me. Basic social media analysis will show that the youth in every community has a strong voice. You only have to look at the ‘keyboard warriors’ in your own social circle to know how the current political climate affects citizens on the ground.

While millions of South Africans committed to making their mark on May 8, think about those who chose not to enact their democratic right to vote.

Are they happy with the current political climate, the state of the economy and quality of service delivery in their areas?

#IMadeMyMark in this National Election, because I believe in using my voice to make a difference. No matter how small or potent that voice is, I chose to exercise my right as a South African citizen.

This week, we pay tribute to one of Newcastle’s most well-known and beloved K9 Unit members, Daniel Trenerry, who sadly passed away earlier in the week.

When I first started at the Advertiser many years ago, I interviewed Daniel at his family home. As a new journalist, I prepared for the interview with trepidation, certain I was going to feel intimidated to be profiling someone so important.

I was so wrong – Daniel was humble, welcoming and open. I remember feeling proud to know Newcastle was being protected by someone who had such an innate passion for his calling.

To his family, friends and colleagues: our heartfelt condolences on the loss of such a brave and wonderful soul. Daniel’s loss will resonate with all who knew him. Rest in Peace Officer Trenerry.
