SANBS works on its cardio

Sewpaul encouraged people to become regular blood donors.

The Newcastle Donor Centre held a fun walk and awareness campaign last week, at Newcastle Corner.

The South African National Blood Services (SANBS) Donor Relations Practitioner, Shavani Sewpaul said the Donor Centre hoped the event would encourage blood donations from residents.

“Today we are hoping to raise awareness about the importance of donating blood. Last year, we collected 4 500 units of blood in KwaZulu-Natal and this year we hope to receive 1 500 units. For the walk, we had learners from many high schools, members of the donor committee, the public and some of our staff joining in. We are happy to have loyal donors in NKZN and want to increase that number in Newcastle.”

Sewpaul encouraged people to become regular blood donors.

She said blood was always in critical need for a number of reasons, and urged donors to avoid waiting for awareness days or special occasions to donate blood.

“We ask the public to donate at any time they feel they should. Blood donations are needed throughout the year.”
