#Women’sMonth: Ladies meet to celebrate their feminism

She encouraged woman, through her own life experiences, to use their challenges and hardships to make them stronger

Sunday afternoon was set aside for women to share, inspire and have fun. It was the first, and hopefully not the last, Ladies Day jointly hosted by Estcourt Spar and Tops. The Estcourt Golf Club was the venue where dozens of women, and one man, settled down for an afternoon that promised to be enlightening.

Master of Ceremonies for the afternoon was Nafisa Gunkel, who had the audience in stitches and some tears as she took charge of the afternoon’s proceedings. In her welcome speech, Ms Gunkel encouraged all women to remember that they are ‘enough’.

“When you look into the mirror every day, say ‘I am enough, I am beautiful’. Each one of us is perfect in our own way. We are all beautiful and most of all strong in our own way,” said Ms Gunkel.

General Manager of Estcourt Spar and familiar face in the Estcourt community Jayshree Sukai welcomed everyone and encouraged them to relax, sit back and enjoy the afternoon. Sister Londeka was first to take the stage and spoke about the being healthy.

She stressed the importance of caring for yourself before you are able to care for others, emphasising the need to listen to your body and understand how it functions.

The Sister spoke about menstrual cycles and menopause, putting into perspective a lot of questions that the audience had, this was evident by the nodding of heads and words of approval. She emphasised the need for exercise, drinking water, breast examinations and pap smears.

Sonja Vorster was the second guest speaker who started her discussion with a poem about an oyster who had to live with a grain of sand, which eventually transformed into a pearl.

Using this analogy, she encouraged woman, through her own life experiences, to use their challenges and hardships to make them stronger.

“You are woman; you are the glue that holds your family together. Sometimes it is okay to take a step back, it is okay to take rest, a break and not save the world. Make time for yourself,” said Mrs Vorster.

In between the lucky draws and entertainment, all the women present can testify that they had a social afternoon in the presence of like-minded women and a ton of fun was had.
