Njabulo Zulu aims to be the next William Shakespeare

His passion for poetry has led him to winning a double gold at the recent Newcastle Eisteddfod.

Armed with a pen, a notepad and the heart of a poet, 16-year-old Njabulo Zulu has dedicated his life to poetry.

The 16-year-old took up his poetic calling four years ago.

“I think poetry is the one platform where I can truly express my feelings, be myself, and not offend anyone.”

Considerate of other people’s emotions, Njabulo’s poetry was focused on social issues and family related problems.

“Some people come off in public as if they have this great life, but back at home behind closed doors, their life is far from good.”

Therefore, his poetry was dedicated to the pain and struggle people endured in silence each day.

His passion for poetry has led him to winning a double gold at the recent Newcastle Eisteddfod.

“There was a big improvement in my work this year at the Eisteddfod, as last year I only received one gold and received 90 per cent for my poem. This year, I received 98 per cent for both poems I entered,” he said with pride.

While elated about the double gold win, Njabulo yearns to pursue a life and career dedicated to poetry.

“I will be matriculating in 2018, and I have this idea to become like William Shakespeare, whom I admire, or become even better. But my family would like me to study and get a degree first.”

As he sets his words down on paper, Njabulo believed his dream would eventually come true and he would change the world through poetry.
